Mike rides the metro

June 30th, 2009 by Mike

I got up early this morning to let the Verizon guy in to install my FiOS internet and TV. The install went well and I have some blazing fast internet:

After he left I went down to the metro for the first time, my dad had lent me his SmarTrip card so I went from Ballston to Dunn Loring to get my own. Riding the metro was easy, I suck at public transportation and directions and I was fine. Then again I did just go a few stops down the orange line.

Ballston Metro 208/365

After that I took my bike out for a spin to find the Apple store and explore a bit more. An easy fun 4 mile ride through traffic.

That is all for today. Chad arrives tomorrow with all of his stuff.

Moved in

June 28th, 2009 by Mike

The day finally arrived, I moved into my Arlington, VA apartment on Saturday. Mom, Dad and I left PA around 9:15 and arrived at my apartment at 12:45. The drive was easy, no real traffic to speak of. After signing a few papers we started to unload the cars as we could not unload the truck until 8pm when we got the loading dock.

It only took about an hour to unload the van and the Focus, which was parked in the underground garage, so we spent the rest of the day putting away what we could. After dinner we were able to use the loading dock and freight elevator to bring the rest of my stuff up to the 21st floor.

The apartment isn’t finished yet, Chad still needs to arrive with his furniture and what not. The layout is nice and I don’t think it is too small by any means. It is also in a great location, just a few blocks to anything you would need. The metro is about a block and a half away and I’m about a 10min drive to work.

Six (+1) Websites that helped me move

June 12th, 2009 by Mike
Respond

While I have not officially moved yet there are a few websites that have helped me with the process and that will continue to help me when I arrive in Alexandria, VA and the DC area.

1. Apartmentratings.com

The first thing I had to figure out when I landed my job was where to live. I had only been to the Washington, DC area a few times (including the interview about three) and I had no idea what to expect as far as pricing, quality, etc. Using Apartmentratings.com I was able to figure all that out. You have to take the reviews with a grain of salt (as with all reviews) but it is a good place to start to narrow your search. You can also set up e-mail alerts when a new review is added to an apartment you were looking at, a nice feature to stay current on reviews during your search.

2. The Washington Post Apartment Showcase

This one is more specific to the DC area but it really helped out a lot. I used Apartment Showcase to search for apartments by the different areas that I wanted to live in (close to work/close to metro). The advanced search tools were awesome and helped me to narrow a field of 15 apartments down to about 5.

3. Yelp.com

Yelp is amazing, I use it on my iPhone all the time, as well as on the yelp.com website. Yelp is a review site and more, you can bookmark business (synced to website and iPhone), add reviews and photos of your own, and use a map to see what is around you. After I decided on an apartment I wanted to know what was in the area, where were the good places to eat, shop, go out for a beer, yelp is basically my tour guide wherever I am. The reviews the users on the site give are normally honest and very helpful. Everything local from restaurants to dry cleaners to banks is reviewed on yelp.

4. Google Maps

I suck at navigating, I would never go anywhere if it wasn’t for Google Maps and GPS. When I want to see how close I am to something, how to get somewhere, or to view even more reviews of a business, I use Google Maps. Because I’m moving to a large city, Street View is available as well. You never realize how helpful it is to see a ground level view of things until you need it.

5. City Data Forum

Whenever you go somewhere new there are always those questions that you can’t find a pre packaged answer to on-line, so you have to actually ask somebody. City data is just the place to do that. With separate forums for states and regions it is easy to post your questions and get an honest response from the locals. It is also helpful to browse around and see what others have asked and what is being discussed. The City Data website itself has all kinds of information about wherever you may be moving to, if you are into that whole way too much information thing.

6. Uncluterer.com

Moving is a great time to get rid of all the excess stuff you own, if you don’t use it don’t bring it. Uncluterer.com has tons of information about living a streamlined lifestyle that is more organized and clutter free. While you don’t have to follow everything to a T (I sure as hell don’t) the tips and info do help. They often have great products and tips, recently they posted how to create a minimalist kitchen. On a slightly more technical side (though often spreading into lifestyle) check out lifehacker.com as well.

There may be more websites and tools that I will use in the next 15 days before my move, but these six are the ones that have helped me out so far. I hope everything goes well on the 27th, it is approaching way too fast.

Back to reality

I got home from my vacation to the Dominican Republic last Wednesday, giving me a few weeks to get everything ready for the move. The Dominican Republic was a lot of fun, how could it not be with good friends, beach, surf, and drinks/food included? The pictures are up on my Flickr so feel free to take a look.

As far as moving stuff goes I have been making progress. I applied for and was approved for a credit card. I’ll only be using it for emergencies but it will be nice to have for the move. I also started to really dive into the piles of crap that are spread around my house. I got rid of a few trash bags worth of stuff but still have a lot to do.

On Saturday my Mom and I went to Ikea to look for a couch for the new apartment. We decided on the Karlstad sofa in Korndal brown. We also picked out a chair, a black leather POÄNG chair with matching footstool.

The next thing I have to do is sign up for the utilities and also sign the lease/mail it out. Switching banks and getting renters insurance are also on the massive to do list. 19 days left until I move, eep.

Graduated

May 18th, 2009 by Mike

Four years go by very fast, on Saturday I graduated from Penn State with a degree in Information Sciences and Technology. I stayed at Penn State Berks, a PSU branch campus, for all four years so I graduated there instead of at UP. The graduation ceremony only took about an hour and fifteen minutes, with less than 200 graduates I’m surprised it wasn’t shorter.
Diploma 163/365
It feels good to be done, especially because I have a job all lined up. The next few weeks are going to be hectic though. This weekend I’m moving out of my apartment then on the 27th I’m heading to the Dominican Republic for a week with some friends. When I get back I have to start organizing, packing, and setting things up for my new apartment (gas, electric, cable, insurance). I’m trying not to think about moving until after I get back from the vacation.

Move to DC news & college

May 10th, 2009 by Mike
Respond

There has been a lot of stuff going on with my fast approaching move to Washington D.C. in June. Kris and I went to D.C. a two weeks ago and toured five different apartments and decided on one we liked. The next week we headed down to do the apartment application and pay some application fees. So barring anything weird with the application we officially have an apartment. We decided on The Tuscany Apartments in Alexandria, VA. The apartments are amazing, as is the building and the management company. They were built to be condos, but because of the economy they changed them to apartments (good for us). A preview of our kitchen is below (granite countertops and new appliances woho!)

Kitchen 152/365

Our move in date is June 20th which gives me some time to get settled and explore the area before starting at CSC on July 6th. I’m glad we have this major step out of the way. Feels good to have an answer to the “so where are you living?” question.

In other news I’m done all of my finals for my senior year, and by all I mean my one final. I will be graduating on May 16th at PSU Berks. It feels good to be done but it hasn’t really settled in yet.

That is all for now. More as the big move gets underway.
